Three ISSA Methodologies and Publications Accepted for Inclusion in Compendium of Best Practices in Human Rights Education
22 May 2008
ISSA was honored to receive the exciting news that three of its methodologies and publications, "Effective Teaching and Learning for Minority Children," "Education for Social Justice," and the "ISSA Pedagogical Standards," have been accepted for inclusion in the Compendium for Good Practices in Human Rights Education.
The Compendium, which includes citizenship education and education for mutual respect and understanding, is being compiled by the Human Rights Education Association, in partnership with the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Council of Europe, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The review process for individual entries included considerations of quality, originality, and transferability to other national contexts.
The Compendium, which will be released in December 2008, is planned as a tool for educational policy makers and educators in the formal education sector. It should support the efforts undertaken in the area of citizenship and human rights education and education for mutual respect and understanding. In particular, it should help ensure quality teaching in these areas, encourage education authorities and practitioners from the OSCE area to learn from the good practices that exist in other countries, and facilitate networking and exchange of experience amongst institutions and individuals working in human rights education.
Human Rights Education Associates (HREA) is an international non-governmental organization that supports human rights learning; the training of activists and professionals; the development of educational materials and programming; and community-building through on-line technologies. HREA is dedicated to quality education and training to promote understanding, attitudes and actions to protect human rights, and to foster the development of peaceable, free and just communities.
