ISSA hosted a Thematic Meeting on Pre-service Training of Early Childhood Professionals and Quality ECD today
June 2011
At the end of June 2011, ISSA hosted a Thematic Meeting in Istanbul, which aimed to create a closer partnership between pre-service and in-service training institutions by developing a common platform for advocating and contributing to quality improvement of educators’ preparation and everyday practices, as required by newly emerging needs of children, families and societies today.
Fifteen countries from the ISSA network were represented at the meeting: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Moldova, Mongolia, Serbia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Romania, Russia, and Ukraine. From each country there was a team of: one representative from a higher education institution providing pre-service training to future early childhood professionals and one representative of an ISSA member organization.
The meeting started by having participants identify the challenges facing the early childhood education field today, from the perspective of children, of educators, of parents and of ECD policy. Discussions then focused on competences which are now missing from the profile of early years educators, taking into account newly emerging needs of children, families and changing societies. These introductory discussions set the ground for a more in-depth analysis around three major topics: 1) pre-service training curriculum for future early childhood educators, 2) teaching strategies used in higher education institutions preparing future educators, and 3) practicum in early childhood pre-service training. Building on conclusions from discussions, a set of recommendations were developed for each topic.
To benefit from the opportunity of having together professionals from 15 different countries, specific time was allocated for building partnerships and cooperation around two topics of common interest, based on the initiative and interest of participants: 1) Building Learning Communities for Students Enrolled in Pre-service Training and 2) Training/Guide for University Teachers.
ISSA extends sincere thanks to the Open Society Foundations, for generous support towards this initiative and to all those who contributed to the meeting. We hope that the results of this meeting will provide a strong platform for future discussions and cooperation.
