Diversity, Inclusion and the Values of Democracy: Building Teachers’ Competences for Intercultural Education

28-30 September 2009 – Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Educational Research Institute of the Developmental Research Center for Education Initiatives along with the INTER Network – Intercultural Education, invite your participation in the conference Diversity, Inclusion and the Values of Democracy: Building Teachers’ Competences for Intercultural Education.  Strands to be covered include:

  1. Teacher trainings, support systems and professional development. The goal of this strand will be to share knowledge and experiences about training and professional development of teachers. Panels will include presentations about pre-service and in-service training programs, training of trainers and support systems for the professional development of teachers from the intercultural education perspective. Panels with presentations on these topics will be on the agenda on the first day of the conference in parallel sessions. 
  2. Sharing examples of good practice from different levels of educational systems. The goal of this strand will be to give participants possibilities to present, discuss, reflect and share their own experiences from their practice on inclusion, diversity and democratic values. Together with presentations at panels there will be a poster session with the same goal. This will take place in the first half of the second conference day.
  3. Visibility and advocacy. The goal of this strand will be to gain knowledge on how to promote intercultural education and the need for teacher’s professional development in this framework. The strand will take place in the second half of the second day.
  4. Where do we go from here? The goal of this strand will be to discover the main successes and problems in building teachers’ competences for intercultural education, to discuss future steps and prepare some guidelines for the future.  Discussions will take place in parallel sessions. Each session will prepare proposals and present them at the last plenary session.
