In early 2009, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (USA) released the third edition of its principles and guidelines for teachers and others in the field of early childhood education. These principles describe what NAEYC calls “developmentally appropriate practice” – that is, teaching practices which ensure that each child learns and develops to their full potential. Well grounded in leading research on child development and educational effectiveness, and carefully reviewed by experts, Developmentally Appropriate Practice can serve as a fundamental guide for all who work with young children.
