Implementing EU Projects in partnership with ISSA Council MembersEnding Minority Exclusion: Education for Social Justice in Central Asia, funded by the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR)This project seeks to improve the wellbeing of children and families from minority groups in the Ferghana Valley regions of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and poor, rural areas of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The project team, made up of Step by Step NGOs in each of the countries partnered with ISSA, hopes to achieve these goals through intensive work with educators, increasing the availability of culturally and developmentally appropriate learning materials, and increased family and community involvement in education. Activities include training teachers at selected project schools in multicultural education practices, publishing manuals for teachers and multi-language learning materials for children, and developing capacity among the NGO implementing partners in each country so that activities can continue beyond EIDHR financing. Country teams are currently working on translating children's books into local languages. In September, the Uzbek team began working with kindergartens in preparation for a training to take place in October. In November, international mentors will meet with country teams to evaluate progress and plan for the future. |
