Consultative Group on Early Childhood Care and Development Annual Consultation (CGECCD)

In October, ISSA's Executive Director Liana Ghent attended the CGECCD Annual Consultation in Chile, where she presented on ISSA's accomplishments surrounding the CGECCD's Four Cornerstones in securing a strong foundation for young children. The four cornerstones are: Start at the Beginning: integrating child development, early stimulation, and parenting information into prenatal, early health, and education services; Get Ready for Success: Ensure access to at least two years of quality early childhood care and development services prior to formal school entry, beginning with the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children; Improve Primary School Quality: increase investments and improve quality in Grades 1 - 3 of primary by providing teachers with knowledge and training in early childhood care and development, adequate learning materials for children and smaller classes; and Include Early Childhood in Policies: Address early childhood in all national policies and plans across sectors, including Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSP) and Fast Track Initiative (FTI), and ensure adequate resources and multi-sectoral coordination. The meeting was hosted by the Chilean Government in collaboration with the UNICEF Chile Country Office and UNESC's Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean. It was attended a diverse group of leading early childhood education and development specialists. The meeting provided excellent networking opportunities and working and planning sessions for the Consultative Group in the areas of Emergencies and Planning, Advocacy, and other issues.
