Books for children and about children from around the world.
The Reading Corner, a project of the International Step by Step Association (ISSA), joins the efforts of authors, illustrators, educators and readers in the countries where ISSA is active to create high quality children's literature in a multitude of languages through the publication of developmentally appropriate, contemporary stories.
- ISSA is pleased to offer these books for purchase through it's store, www.amazon.com, www.amazon.co.uk, and www.amazon.de. In addition, the books can be viewed in their entirety in all languages at www.biguniverse.com.
- ISSA also offers materials for parents and caregivers to accompany a selection of the Reading Corner books. In 2008, ISSA created "Opening Magic Doors: Reading and Learning Together" Activity Kits to help parents and caregivers build children's literacy skills and explore books in fun ways. The Reading Corner books and Activity Kits can be used by educators, family members and caregivers in order to:
- Promote early literacy through engaging young children in listening to and reading entertaining stories and offering activities that build on the stories.
- Engage children in critical thinking through individual or group discussions about how they can make a difference in their own lives.
- Support discussions on everyday themes such as friendship, family, sharing, helping others, etc.
- Support understanding of issues children face in their lives, such as how to handle change, how to rectify mistakes, how to express one's opinion and communicate, as well as to introduce children to more complex issues such as poverty and loss.
- Introduce the diversity of the world by featuring multinational settings where children can learn about the similarities and differences among children, families, communities and nations.
