Despite the central role of pre-service teacher education (PSTE) in promoting quality education, it has largely been left out of the significant investments made to improve FLN in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) over the past two decades. These bilateral and multilateral investments have instead tended to focus on in-service teacher training as a means of producing faster results at scale. While investments in PSTE may take longer to influence student-level outcomes, they are key to the sustainability of pedagogical changes in schools.

How can we develop pre-service teacher education to improve FLN?

Please join us as we release a new How-To Guide that provides suggestions to policy makers, donors, implementers and teacher educators on how to effectively develop primary-level PSTE for FLN. This guide is accompanied by an in-depth literature review that critically analyses the current literature and gaps in existing knowledge about pre-service teacher education in LMICs. During the event, you will hear from two of the guide authors, as well as from deans of teacher education programs to hear their perspective on the topic.
