National Quality Monitor Child Care in the Netherlands

From 2017 on, Utrecht University and ISSA member Sardes will yearly assess the quality of child care services in the Netherlands. The project is commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs, under the name of Landelijke Kwaliteitsmonitor Kinderopvang (LKK): National Quality Monitor Child Care. The aim is to improve the quality of the work in childcare in the Netherlands.

To get the best possible insight into the quality level of child care, validated observation instruments, questionnaires and video recordings will be used. Observation instruments such as the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale (ITERS-R) and Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS-R) provide opportunities for international comparison. All forms of childcare will be included in the monitor, i.e. also after-school care and childminders and host parents. Another novelty is that children’s evaluations will be collected as well: how do they experience the quality? In total 176 child care locations will be monitored and the first group has already been recruited. Find out more on the Dutch website
