At the end of April 2023, a group of early childhood specialists from Moldova was on a study visit to the Netherlands. The early childhood intervention (ECI) system in Moldova is still in the process of being developed and implemented at the national level, and that is why it was important to see how it is working in the other country. Representatives of four newly opened ECI centers from different regions of Moldova were very interested in gaining knowledge and getting to know the organization and provision of ECI services in the Netherlands.

The young mother Oxana from Moldova eagerly waited for her first child, and her husband even chose the name for the baby girl – Elena. The heartbreaking news came unexpectedly after birth. Regardless of the results of prenatal examinations, Oxana’s baby was born with exophthalmia – a girl had only one eye. The hospital staff advised the parents to abandon the child, saying that they are too young to have such a burden and that Elena is a child without the future…

Early Learning and Development Standards for Children from Birth to 7 (ELDS) and Early Childhood Development Teacher Standards are coupled to reinforce a holistic approach to child learning and development through child-centered practices. The ELDS, along with traditionally addressed physical and cognitive domains, bring into the foreground the socio-emotional domain, language and communication, as well as attitudes towards learning. All five domains are interrelated and each domain is explicated through standards and indicators.

The Step by Step organisation in Moldova organized a nine-day training delivered in three rounds (Module I in February, Module II in April, and Module III in August) with the aim to contribute to the reform of preschool education in the country, based on a child-centered paradigm. During the first half of the month, ISSA’s member in Moldova, the Step by Step organisation, has been the leading partner in delivering an ambitious training for preschool teachers together with other two NGO’s, the Education Center Pro Didactica and the Speranta Center.
