Building a better society: new ISSA Member Humankind invites collaboration
For over four decades, Humankind Kinderopvang en -ontwikkeling (childcare and development) has been a pioneer in childcare and child development in the Netherlands. From its inception in 1983 as a childcare organization, Humankind has evolved into a leader in child development, impacting over 30,000 children annually with the support of more than 4,000 dedicated professionals. Guided by a vision rooted in humanist values, the organization believes every child holds the potential to contribute to a better society when nurtured in an environment of respect and care.
Humankind’s innovative approach extends beyond traditional childcare. Through initiatives such as Natuurkr8, which immerses children in nature, and Wiskids, a program encouraging mathematical thinking in young learners, the organization fosters lifelong skills and values.
Programs like Bende Happy and Ziejezo elevate child participation by giving children a voice in decision-making and promoting active, outdoor play. These initiatives exemplify Humankind’s commitment to empowering children to grow into strong, compassionate adults.
The impact of this approach is personified in the story of Anouk Brus. Starting as a baby in a Humankind daycare center, Anouk’s journey showcases the organization’s influence. From her early days inspired by her pedagogical caregiver, Joke (pronounced Yoh-keh), to her role as a pedagogical teacher at Humankind Academy, Anouk reflects:
“Humankind has shaped who I am today. As a person and in my work. I still vividly remember Joke. She made me feel at home. Think about that: 25 years later I still talk about her. That is real impact!” — Anouk Brus
As an active ISSA network Member, Humankind is eager to share its expertise with like-minded organizations. Its robust methodologies, such as child-led satisfaction surveys and movement-focused initiatives, address both current and future societal challenges. By sharing knowledge through workshops, guided tours, and collaborative projects, Humankind invites fellow ISSA Members and other organizations to co-create solutions for nurturing resilient, capable children.
